LAST CHANCE TOURNAMENT & LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

This photo says it all
Having failed to earn a playoff spot in the regular season, we were down to our last chance -- literally. By winning our league's Last Chance Tournament, we could earn a place in the finals next Wednesday. Top seeded 211 In Progress is waiting for whomever survives this weekend's tournament and playoffs.

Sadly, it wasn't a good day for Team PBS. Each game was a struggle for us. We didn't reach 800 in any of the three games we bowled and we weren't close to making the cut. Here are our scores:

         01  02  03  SER   AVG
Quinton 191 150 193  534 178.0
Mark    206 202 177  585 195.0
Brandon 146 153 179  478 159.3
Garrett 205 216 219  640 213.3
TOTAL   748 721 768 2237 186.4

The four teams to make the cut were Team 3 (henceforth, I will refer to them as Joy Division), Marin Express Lube, Meier & Sons Roofing, and Jack's Patio. In match play, Joy Division defeated Marin Express Lube while Meier & Sons Roofing knocked off Jack's Patio. The two victors earned first round playoff spots at 10:00 AM Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning, the first two playoff matches (2-game series) started shortly after 10:00 AM. On lanes 1-2, Meier & Sons Roofing met Let's Get This Money. Mike was trapped in San Francisco by roadblocks for the Bay To Breakers race and didn't arrive in time to bowl the first game. It took him three hours to reach Concord from San Francisco.

LOST              14     LOST               5

This match was much closer than the 14-5 score would suggest. Let's Get This Money won the first game by 10 pins and the second by 4. They were behind in the second game but Treico buried three strikes in the tenth frame to pull it out. Mike's average with a 20 pin penalty in the first game was good enough to earn a match point in his absence.

On lanes 5-6, Joy Division took on Beast Mode. Joy Division was able to survive Saturday without Greg but doing so today would be a much taller order.

Beast Mode came out on fire with a score of 910 in the first game to earn all seven points. That put a lot of pressure on Joy Division in the second game since it takes only ten points to win the series. The second game was a tie at 850 but Joy Division needed much more than that to stay alive. With Stephen and Scott winning their match points, the 1-1/2 points for the tied game was all they needed. The match points for winning all of the series were gravy.

With their first round victories, Let's Get This Money and Beast Mode moved over to lanes 3-4 to battle for a shot at the defending champs, High Flush, in the next round.

LOST              13     LOST               6

The first game was extremely tight and not without some controversy. John, Lydell, and Treico each earned a match point with narrow victories over their opponents. However, Stephen's 258 carried Beast Mode to a victory by five pins, earning them three game points and one match point for a 4-3 lead.

In the ninth frame, Craig had a ball hang on his thumb which threw him off balance to the point he stepped on the cap. The ball lobbed upward then landed with a loud THUD before rolling slowly down the lane as if released by a bumper bowler. It eventually made contact with the pins and left only the 9-pin standing. It wasn't clear that Craig made contact at or beyond the foul line so it was necessary to look at a video replay. According to the video, it was indeed a foul so the nine pins on the first shot were scratched from Craig's score. He knocked down all ten with his second shot to avert disaster.

After the close call in the first game, the second game was won quite handily by Beast Mode. Having knocked out Let's Get This Money, Beast Mode moved over to lanes 7-8  to take on High Flush.

The winner of this match would advance to face top seeded 211 In Progress on Wednesday night for the top prize.

By the time Beast Mode reached the third round, they were in a groove. High Flush never really got going and didn't break 800 in either game. Beast Mode won handily even with McEachran The Elder bowling a 168 in the first game. McEachran The Younger more than made up for it with a 259 which he followed up with a 258 in the second game. The only other remarkable occurrence in the series was a 247-247 tie between Craig and Scott White in the first game.

While the rest of us grub for some sweeper money Wednesday night, it will be Beast Mode taking on 211 In Progress for the big quid.

  1. The championship match was held on our sweeper night. Team PBS was bowling at the same time several lanes away, so we weren't able to watch. (There was also the added distraction of the Pacers vs Heat playoff game on the TV behind us.) Before we finished, we learned that 211 In Progress defeated Beast Mode for the league championship. Congratulations to both teams for a great season.
